Filter Pump FAQs

Please note: Intex Filter Pumps are designed to work with Intex Above Ground Swimming Pools. Intex 530 GPH Model 603 - 1000 GPH Model 637 Filter Pumps have 1 1/4" ID hoses that slide over the protruding ports on Intex 8', 10', 12', 15' and 16' Easy Set and PVC/Metal Frame Swimming Pools. Intex 1500 GPH - 4000 GPH Filter Pump have 1 1/2" ID hoses with female threaded ends to work with Intex 18' and larger Intex Easy Set and PVC/Metal Frame Swimming pools. There are many "knockoff brands of pools that the Intex Filter Pumps will work with but we do not guarantee fitment nor do we sell pool equipment to be tested and returned.

The Intex 1500 GPH and 2500 GPH Filter Pumps can be adapted to fit Intex brand 16' and smaller pools with a set of hose adapters, Item 10722 Hose Adapter B. The Hose Adapter B is a compression fitting on one side that slides over and clamps down on the 1 1/4" ports on 16' and smaller Intex Swimming pools. The other side is a male threaded fitting that accepts the larger 1 1/2" hoses included with the Intex 1500 GPH Model 635 and Intex 2500 GPH Model 633 Filter Pumps. We do not recommend adapting the Intex 4000 GPH Filter Pump Model 621 Filter Pump to the 16' and smaller pools. The flow restriction is too great for the flow rate of the 4000 GPH Filter Pump and can cause the inlet hose and or inlet side adapter seal to collapse.

1.) Does a filter pump have to be used with my Intex above ground pool?

Yes, for hygienic purposes we recommend that a filter pump be used with all Intex 8' or larger above ground pools.

2.) Does the filter pump keep the pool walls and bottom clean?

No. With proper chemicals and filter cartridge replacement, the pump will keep the pool clean from suspended water particles. A pool vacuum should be used to clean the bottom of the pool. You can order the Intex pool vacuum to clean your pool, however it will not pick up fine dust or sand that sinks to the bottom.

3.) Can we use the pool while the filter pump is operating? Is it safe?

Yes, if the pump is operated according to the manual, and with proper GFCI installation.

4.) Can any Intex pump be used to empty the pool?

No. Intex pumps are not designed for this purpose.

5.) What is the best way to store the filter pump for the winter?

Remove and dry all pump pieces including the hoses; coat the seals, O-Rings, and washers with petroleum jelly (see manual for detailed instructions).

6.) What is your suggestion on pump maintenance?

Occasionally, petroleum jelly may be applied to the "O-Ring" located underneath the top filter cover to minimize seal cracking. Check hoses for leaks and replace if needed. Also, make sure you've cleaned or replaced the filter cartridges as recommended.

7.) How often should the filter cartridge be replaced?

Depending on usage and water conditions, it is recommended that the cartridges be replaced every 2 weeks. The filter cartridge should be removed and checked at least once a week. It can be partially cleaned by rinsing with a garden hose. If it still appears dirty, it should be replaced immediately.

8.) Does the pump run on AC or DC power?

110-120V or 12V, single phase AC, in the US and Canada.

9.) Is the pump UL approved?

Yes, both UL (United States and Puerto Rico) and CSA (Canada) approved, with the exception of the Model M1 Filter Pump which is currently pending.

10.) Do you need to purchase a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet?

Yes. It should be installed by a licensed electrician. In-Line GFCI's can also be purchased.

11.) What is a GFCI (circuit breaker).

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) is an electronic device for protecting people from serious injury due to electric shock. GFCI constantly monitors electricity flowing in a circuit. If the electricity flowing into the circuit differs by even a slight amount from that returning, the GFCI will quickly shut off the current flowing through the circuit. The advantage of using a GFCI is that it can detect even small variations in the amount of current flowing through an electrical product, even amounts too small to activate a fuse or circuit breaker. GFCI works quickly in order to help protect consumers from severe electric shocks, while most common circuit breakers (thermal snap action) take far too long to stop the flow of electricity.

12.) What is the gallons per hour capacity of the pump?

Model 58603 approximately 530 gallons per hour. Model 56637 approximately 800 gallons per hour. Model 56635 approximately 1,500 gallons per hour. Model 56633 approximately 2,500 gallons per hour.

13.) How many amps does it take to operate the filter pump?

Intex filter pumps draw .35 to 4.0 amps of current. Normal households have 15 amp outlets.

14.) What is the life of the filter pump?

Estimated filter pump life is approximately 2000 hours, which is about 4 seasons of normal usage.

15.) Can I hook up a vacuum to the pump?

No, Intex pumps are not designed to be used with a vacuum.

16.) How do I know if I have a truly defective pump and not just an oversight on my part?

Review the Trouble Shooting Guide in the owner's manual.

17.) Should consumers repair the pump themselves?

No, because of the electrical connections and their location to the water chamber, and improper repair may result in injury or death.

18.) Are any tools required to assemble the pump?

No. A penny or dime can be used to tighten the hose clamps.

19.) Will the pump get damaged if splashed with water?

No.

20.) Is there a written warranty for this product?

Yes, the filter pump comes with a limited written one year warranty included in the owner's manual.

21.) What does the warranty cover?

All manufacturing defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year from the original date of purchase.

22.) How long is the filter pump electrical cord?

25 feet long for 110V - 120V AC.

23.) What is the approximate weight of the pump?

Approximately 8 lbs for the Model (58603). Approximately 9.1 lbs for the Model (56637). Approximately 18.2 lbs for Model (56635). Approximately 24 lbs for the Model (56633).

24.) If the pump is defective will I be reimbursed for postage?

No, the pump is to be returned to Intex, freight prepaid. Intex will pay the postage to return the replacement pump. (See Limited Warranty in the Owner's Manual).

25.) What is the recommended procedure to keep my pool clean while waiting for my replacement pump?

Keep all debris out of the pool, keep it covered, and maintain the proper pH level.

26.) The water flow is not as strong as it used to be, why?

See the Trouble Shooting Guide in the Owner's Manual. Also, check the filter cartridge. If it is dirty the water flow will be much less powerful. Replace the cartridge. Also, check the hoses for any pinhole leaks. Tanning oil and sunblock lotion can create a clear coat on the filter cartridges which can cause diminished water flow.

27.) Can the filter pump be operated when a cover is on the pool?

Yes.

28.) Can I adapt my 8', 10', 12', or 15' pool to the larger 56635, 56633 Filter Pumps?

Intex has hose adaptors available that allow consumers to convert the smaller sized pools to the larger Intex Model 56635, 56633 Filter Pumps. You will need (2) hose adaptors, ID# 10371.

29.) Can I disassemble the motor housing to clean the inside?

No. This will invalidate the filter pump warranty and Intex will not be responsible for anything that might result from opening the motor housing for any reason.
